The Beverly Hills Hotel
Posted on May 9, 2012
Spanish-style architecture has long been a feature of many homes in the Beverly Hills real estate market. Featuring stucco walls, arched doorways and windows, beautiful tile work throughout, and red-tiled roofs, Spanish-style homes can be found all over Southern California, but Beverly Hills and surrounding markets offer some of the most gorgeous examples anywhere in the world. The Mission Revival style is especially popular in this area. This style was modeled after the California missions that were built in the 18th century, borrowing elements such as bell towers, recessed front porches, and roof parapets. One iconic example of a Mission-style structure in Beverly Hills is the The Beverly Hills Hotel with its large “bell tower”. Diane... Read More »

This mindset extends to the outdoor space, as well. Many luxury homes in the Beverly Hills area include spectacular swimming pools and water features custom built to create a backyard paradise. Homebuyers delight in features like tiered fountains in the center of Italian-tiled swimming pools. Or what about a gentle stream of water cascading down copper walls that enclose a comfortable outdoor living space? Outdoor gourmet kitchens are another valued feature in the current market. Beverly Hills City Hall/Reg Nejaratan
Posted on May 2, 2012
Movie stars have flocked to Beverly Hills for decades. Many of the landmarks in the city now rival even its most popular celebrity residents for number of on-screen appearances. Beverly and Canon Drives have the classic rows of perfectly spaced palm trees lining both sides of the wide roadways. They show up again and again to establish classic Hollywood scenes in various films and television shows, from the Beverly Hillbillies to Pretty Woman. Beverly Hills Cop famously featured Beverly Hills City Hall in several scenes, and apparently it will also make an appearance in an upcoming Tom Cruise movie.  In a comical turn of events earlier this month, residents were confused to see a sign in front of Beverly Hills City Hall that read “City... World class eateries line the streets, featuring a wide variety of cuisines expertly prepared by award-winning chefs, attracting celebrities and the people who follow them, but celebrities aren’t the only ones enjoying the gourmet lifestyle at their doorsteps. It is not unusual to catch a glimpse of a lucky four-legged friend dining alongside their companion at even the poshest Beverly Hills eateries. Lawry's The Prime Rib

The name Lawry’s immediately brings to mind the familiar shaker of seasoning salt for many people, but the birthplace of this ubiquitous spice is a classic Beverly Hills establishment still in operation today. Lawry’s The Prime Rib on La Cienega Boulevard has been churning out classic all-American fare since 1938, serving countless high profile guests, including long-time regulars Frank Sinatra and Mohammed Ali. Unlike most other restaurants centered on beef, Lawry’s is considered a carvery. The only meat on the menu is the standing rib roast, and it is served as it always has been, cut to order from a silver carving cart rolled table to table. The famous Yorkshire pudding has been served since day one, as well. Today Lawry’s offers... Read More »

Beverly Hills is known throughout the world as a destination for glamour, luxury, and prestige. Countless celebrities and industry leaders have called this gorgeous area home for decades, and fashion-conscious consumers around the globe consider Rodeo Drive a designer mecca. It’s hard to believe it’s been less than a century since the fertile land under Beverly Hills was mostly farmland and wilderness, but it’s true. As the film industry took off in the early part of the 20th century, so did the real estate market surrounding Los Angeles. It all started with residences like the Pickfair Estate in 1924. One of Hollywood’s earliest power couples, silent film stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, wanted to establish a residence outside... Read More »

Dale Chihuly Art Glass Chandelier

Modern luxury has new meaning as show-stopping light fixtures have become a hot design trend in the Beverly Hills real estate market. Museum-worthy chandeliers can be found gracing dramatic entryways while handcrafted sconces light up hallways. One source of home decorating inspiration is Dale Chihuly, an artist long renowned for his intricate, bold glass work, which appears in art museums around the world. Much-lauded glass work artist Robert Kaindl made headlines when he created an elaborate, dramatic light installation for the Four Seasons Beverly Hills in 2009. Now, homebuyers are seeing the result of these inspirations as home-lighting vendors offer an increasingly broad selection of artist-inspired pieces for the residential market. The... Read More »

The Doheny Estate/Greystone Mansion
Posted on April 11, 2012
The Greystone Mansion boasts a list of film credits few actors can claim. This 46,000-square-foot Tudor-style estate-turned-city-park was built in 1928. It has been featured in dozens of films and television productions, with its descending staircase often taking top billing. Originally, the photogenic one-time residence was built as a gift for the son of oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, for his son “Ned” Doheny, Jr. The younger Doheny died at Greystone only a few months after the home building was completed, and his widow sold the estate to Chicago industrialist Henry Crown, who rented it out to movie studios. Later, Crown tried to sell the estate in subdivided lots, but the city of Beverly Hills stepped in, bought the property and leased... Read More »

Anderton Court Shops on Rodeo Drive
Posted on April 9, 2012
The work of Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most prolific and highly regarded architects in American history, is mostly centered in the Midwest. But his signature architectural style can be found in Los Angeles. The Anderton Court Shops on Rodeo Drive are one particularly iconic locale within the city limits of Beverly Hills. Anderton Court Shops was the last structure Wright designed in the Los Angeles area. Structurally, it stands out from nearby buildings with a “V” shaped front elevation. Originally designed to hold three storefronts, today this 3-story building features six shops. The white building with black accents was initially painted a buff color with copper-colored accents. The awning was a later addition. Wright designed several... Read More »

Beverly Wilshire Hotel

It might be hard to believe that one of the most well-known and well-traveled streets in Los Angeles had its origins in a barley field, but in fact, this was the inauspicious beginning of Wilshire Boulevard. In the 1890s, Ohio-transplant Henry Gaylord Wilshire cleared out the path in his field that would later grow to become one of the most famous stretches of roadway in America. The Gaylord, a historic apartment building bearing his middle name, sits directly across from the Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire. Today, Wilshire Boulevard is a major thoroughfare, stretching nearly 16 miles from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica to the west, passing through Beverly Hills along the way. One notable stretch is known as the Miracle Mile, where classic... Read More »

While Beverly Hills features many fashionable and highly sought-after areas where residents enjoy a seemingly ever-present spotlight, many options for luxury homebuyers who value privacy and seclusion exist in the Beverly Hills real estate market, as well. One such notable area is the Beverly Hills Post Office neighborhood, Beverly Park. Here, residents enjoy incredible views from extraordinary estates set on hillsides above Beverly Hills, with the added bonus of thoughtful security measures throughout the neighborhood. To reach homes in Beverly Park, visitors must pass through multiple layers of security. It is not possible to simply drive up to a home here unannounced, which is part of the reason so many notable business owners and celebrities... Read More »

Today’s luxury homebuyers are keeping an eye toward the marriage between exceptional style and a decreased environmental impact. Several notable trends have emerged in the past several years in the Beverly Hills real estate market: extensive outdoor kitchens, spa amenities in bathrooms, state-of-the-art security systems, and remote access that allows homeowners to control nearly every mechanized aspect of their homes from anywhere in the world. While these upgrades are worthwhile and certain to turn heads, luxury real estate buyers have also begun taking special note of homes that have been built or renovated with the environment in mind. Many home builders and noted designers specialize in these enhancements. Buyers and renovators need not... Read More »

When buying a luxury home in a community like Beverly Hills or Bel Air, it’s important to have an eye for every detail in order to know that you’re getting the very best. Certain features of a home are obvious selling points: the size of the property, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, on-site amenities and architectural style are all major factors in a decision to buy. But a knowledge of the smaller luxuries that go into making a property truly unique can help a buyer to discern the full value of a home. For example, even the material a home’s kitchen cabinets are made of can contribute to the overall sense of quality. Birdseye Maple is one of the most sought-after materials in kitchen cabinets today.  It gets its name from its distinct... Read More »

One of the most evocative roads in America, Sunset Boulevard winds across just over 20 miles of western Los Angeles County, from Figueroa St to the Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades.  It passes through Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Holmby Hills, and Bel Air.  The Boulevard has been the backdrop of many artistic works; perhaps most famously immortalized in the 1950 classic film noir work, Sunset Boulevard, starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson. One of the most well-known portions of the road is the almost two mile stretch in West Hollywood known as the Sunset Strip.  An entertainment hub and center of nightlife for nearly 100 years, the strip is home to nightclubs such as The Roxy Theatre and Whisky a Go Go.   West... The kitchen has long been considered to be the heart of the home.  Whether you are entertaining in numbers or hosting an intimate gathering of family and friends, people naturally converge in the kitchen.   Of course you want it be a beautiful showcase, containing only the finest materials.  In countertops, for example, is granite or quartz better? Performance of both countertops is similar; they are quite durable with proper care.  Cost is comparable as well, varying based on availability and choice of material.  These days, quartz and granite are de rigueur in fine Beverly Hills properties.   While both have unique advantages, it seems there is not a clear winner in this debate.  What is best for your home is determined by your personal...
